Berry Vanilla Oatmeal

This recipe really is quite simple. The only reason I added berries was because I was out of both bananas and almond butter (I took it as a sign of the apocalypse) and had to improvise *sigh* and make due with some frozen fruit. We had peanut butter, and thought it truly is very yummy, peanuts just don't have that many notable nutrients like almonds do. Ah well, life goes on. But back to the point; this recipe was surprisingly delicious and perfect for a cold morning. So cold that I nearly froze outside when I took this picture. See my bare feet? Yes. Not smart. 

Berry Vanilla Oatmeal

1/2 cup oats
1/2 cup plant milk
1 cup frozen fruit (I used a mixture of strawberries and blueberries)
1 tsp vanilla bean paste (or extract or powder)

Chia seeds
Nut butter

Bring the milk and berries to a boil and add the oats. Simmer until liquid is absorbed. Stir in the vanilla and allow oats to sit for a minute or two over medium low heat. Serve with topping of your choice. Enjoy!

My Life Lately

Has it been a while? It feels like it's been a while. School has been pretty crazy lately, especially with midterms coming up! So here's just a little glimpse of what's new with me recently.

Antiquing finds! A pair of 70s earrings, a flower headband from a street vendor, an embroidered pendant, a flower postcard, one tin of Queen Elizabeth, and a vintage postage stamp.

Whale watching! Traveled to the Cape and got sufficiently seasick, but got to see one of the most beautiful creatures on Earth.

Fun things spotted in the city

Did someone say ice cream????? Creepy ice cream man on the back of the ice cream truck.

DC traveling time - went to see an amazing concert.

Just your average Plant Shopping Saturday.

And of course I had to include some England nostalgia. I miss it too much. This was the view from our hotel in Notting Hill!

37 Ways to Feel Better After a Completely Sucky Day

Some days are the absolute freaking suckiest. Like those days when the universe is literally conspiring against you, and you feel like you're the chipper sidekick in a Disney movie who says, "Well, at least it can't get any worse-" *cue thunderstorm*. Today happens to be one of those days for me, so I decided to compile a list of happy things to do that usually help me. Feel better and remember that everything always looks better in the morning. No lie!

  1. Walk/drive to the library and lose yourself in a stack of good books.
  2. Make yourself a hot cup of tea (or cocoa or coffee, whatever floats your boat.)
  3. Call/FaceTime your best friend, your grandma, your sister, anyone.
  4. Dance around your room to an empowering song about not caring (I like "Shake It Off" by Taylor Swift or "F***ing Perfect" by Pink)
  5. Take a nice hot bath with bubbles and read.
  6. Read outside.
  7. Read inside.
  8. Seriously. Read.
  9. Write without even thinking for ten minutes straight, and then write some more.
  10. Binge watch an entire series while eating a pint Ben&Jerry's (Favorite show to binge watch: either Teen Wolf or Dance Academy. Favorite ice cream: Ben&Jerry's Milk and Cookies)
  11. Do your makeup.
  12. Take a break with Calming Brits (& Irishmen)
  13. Dress up in fancy clothes.
  14. Get some puppy lovin' here
  15. Make an inspiration board (DIY coming soon)
  16. Bake cookies and then invite a friend over to eat them with you.
  17. Print out inspirational quotes/pictures and tape them around your room.
  18. Smile. (try it!)
  19. Do yoga.
  20. Take a nice long nap and don't set your alarm.
  21. Cancel your plans and have a night in.
  22. This website is literally a bunch of jumping cats. DO IT.
  23. Go out to dinner with a friend.
  24. See a movie with a friend.
  25. Take a bubble bath.
  26. Paint your nails.
  27. Grab a hug here
  28. Workout! (or curl under the covers and sleep for a while.)

    • Take a long, slow breath in through your nose, first filling your lower lungs, then your upper lungs.
    • Hold your breath to the count of "three."
    • Exhale slowly through pursed lips, while you relax the muscles in your face, jaw, shoulders, and stomach.

But most of all, live in the moment. Recognize your emotions; it's okay to feel sad! It's a human emotion. We're all meant to feel it. Otherwise how would we differentiate between joy and sadness?

Inspo Monday

What an incredibly stressful week! I'm already tired and it's only Monday. I really have no idea how I'm going to survive! I found some happy pictures on We Heart It (follow me @ fififiooonnaaa) and they cheered me up a bit, so here you go. Now I have to stop procrastinating and finally finish this math project...

recipe diaries: vanilla chai latte

I've always loved chai lattes, but at Starbucks they're like six dollars and a bit disappointing. Yes, you do get that boho-hipster flare when you're carrying around a Starbucks cup of coffee, but why not make your own? I love to buy things but hate to spend money, so I decided to make my own. I looked up a million different recipes and sort of made my own little thing. Seriously, it's delicious. 

2/3 cup milk*
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 chai tea bag
2/4 cup water
1 tbsp sugar
Pinch of cinnamon

1. Combine the sugar, milk, and vanilla extract into a saucepan over medium heat. Heat it until it's on the verge of boiling, then remove from heat.
2. Put the water in a microwave-safe mug and heat it for about 1 minute and 15 seconds.
3. Steep the tea bag in the water for 2 minutes. 
4. Pour the milk mixture into the tea (as much or as little as you'd like) and sprinkle with cinnamon.
*Milk can be substituted for unsweetened almond milk. You can also use vanilla almond milk, just skip the vanilla extract.
